Can You Chromecast With Apple Mac Photos App

They may be two different technologies with operating systems that are poles apart, but surprisingly they do get along with the right apps. Send your photos, videos and music to your TV.

If you have an Apple iPhone then an Apple TV is an excellent companion product that is perfect for playing movies, TV shows, music and photos. However, you could buy six Chromecast TV dongles for the price of a top of the range Apple TV and still have change left over for a night out, or a night in with a bunch of rented movies. A bottom of the range Apple TV is double the price of Chromecast Ultra with 4k video.

I have an Apple TV on the main TV in my lounge, but for another TV in the home I have a cheap Chromecast dongle. It makes sense and with kids these days often having their own TVs in their bedrooms, you could have three or more TVs. It would cost a lot to fit them all with Apple TVs, but Chromecasts are cheap and work perfectly with Android phones.

Chromecasts even work quite well with iPhones and iPads with the right apps.

YouTube

With the YouTube app on an iPhone or iPad, you can easily connect it to a TV with a Chromecast dongle. The Chromecast icon appears at the top of the screen in the app and tapping it lists the Chromecasts on the local Wi-Fi network. Tap the one you want and the YouTube app connects.

Any video you play then appears on the TV and they can be selected and queued up to play. It is great if you have created a YouTube playlist of music videos and you can sit back and watch them on the big screen TV instead of the small screen iPhone. It makes a massive difference.

Google Play Music

If you have a Google Play Music subscription or if you have uploaded your own music and stored it online (you can upload 50,000 music tracks), the music can be played through the TV using a Chromecast.

If your TV has a good sound system connected to it, it is an excellent way to play music and it is convenient if you don't have other speakers you can use, such as an Apple HomePod. That is a nice speaker, but it is expensive and is mainly aimed at Apple Music subscribers. A Chromecast connected to the TV makes a good alternative.

When music is streaming to the TV, you might wonder what appears on the screen? The answer is the album artwork. You can also see the album, track and artist names so you always know what is playing.

Google Play Movies and TV

As you might expect, this has Chromecast support built in and at the top of the home screen is a Chromecast icon. Press it and select the Chromecast device to connect to. From then on, anything that plays in the app, such as movies or TV, appears on the TV screen.

It really could not be simpler and there is nothing to it. You can connect with two taps and then start a movie with one more tap. You can be streaming a movie from the iPhone or iPad to the TV in just a few seconds.

Google Photos

This is another Google app and so it has Chromecast support built in. Just tap the Chromecast button at the top of the screen and select the Chromecast. When a photo is viewed on the iPhone it is also displayed on the TV screen. Swiping left or right over photos goes to the next or previous image, so you can easily show off photos to friends and family.

Unlike Apple's iCloud paid photo storage, Google Photos provides unlimited online storage for images under 16 megapixels. Unless you have a professional camera that takes images of more than 16 MP, Google Photos is better than Apple Photos.

Photo Video Cast to Chromecast

This is a free app in the App Store and it can be used in two ways. Open the app itself and you can browse thumbnail images of all the photos in your photo library. Press a photo and it appears on the TV screen. There are options to show it at low or medium resolution (high with a paid upgrade), and it can fit the screen or fill and pan or fill and centre.

The app also appears on the Share menu, so anything that can be shared from an app can be displayed on the screen. Photos in other apps for example, could be sent from the iPhone to the TV screen. It didn't work everywhere and with everything, but it works with a lot.

If you don't see the Cast button in the sharing options, press More and turn on the switch to add it.

Chromecast TV Streamer

This free app is able to stream online video from a web browser to the TV screen via the Chromecast dongle. It will not work with protected video like Netflix, but it does work with general video streaming sites.

Go to Daily Motion for example, and start a video playing in the browser. Tapping the light bulb icon at the bottom of the screen enables a Chromecast to be selected and then the video is streamed to the TV. It isn't needed for YouTube, but for other sites that do not support Chromecast, it is useful.

Another interesting feature of this app is that it live streams from the iPhone camera. Press the link in the app under Live Camera and you appear on TV. Sound can be included too. This could be used when making presentations to a group of people if there are no facilities for making yourself seen or heard right at the back of the room. Just hold your phone in front of you and you are broadcast to the TV.
