How to Block YouTube Ads with AdBlock

Block YouTube ads with AdBlock

YouTube is one of the most popular destinations on the web. It's also the source of some of the most annoying ads. From 30-second pre-roll ads to 5 unskippable 6-second ads in a 10-minute video, one study found that YouTube is second only to Facebook when it comes to offering up the most frustrating ads on the Internet.

Fortunately, YouTube seems to be hearing viewers' complaints about the most egregious ads. It eliminated the much-reviled unskippable 30-second ad format last February (after promising to do so for a year). Many viewers still find the number, placement, and content of YouTube ads unacceptable.

Thanks to AdBlock, however, you can take control of which ads you see and when. Here's how to block YouTube ads with AdBlock and make it enjoyable again.

How to Block Ads on YouTube

Just kidding! With AdBlock, you don't have to do anything to start removing YouTube ads. AdBlock blocks all ads on YouTube.com as soon as you install it — pre-roll, mid-roll, even the ads in the "Up next" sidebar.

How to Block YouTube Ads on Mobile Devices

Because of the way mobile apps are designed, AdBlock can't block ads in the YouTube app (or in any other app, for that matter). To ensure you don't see ads, watch YouTube videos in a mobile browser with AdBlock installed. On iOS, use Safari; on Android, use Firefox or Samsung Internet. (The ubiquitous Chrome doesn't support browser extensions such as AdBlock.) You don't need a specific YouTube ad blocker for Firefox or Safari, once again the all-in-one AdBlock does it all for you.

How to Support YouTube Creators

Let's get it out of the way right up front: Do YouTube creators need your support? Things haven't been going well for many of them lately. Following a series of changes in YouTube's ad policy over the past year, fewer channels are showing ads these days. On the other hand, those that are may soon show even more ads.

One question that's often asked is "Do YouTubers make money if you skip the ad?" Nope. You have to watch the ad all the way through. And in an age when YouTube creators often abuse viewers with too many (and unskippable) ads, blocking ads is a choice many viewers make with a clear conscience. But what if you want to support your favorite YouTubers, but you want an ad-free YouTube on other channels? You can do that easily with AdBlock.

Allow Ads on Specific YouTube Channels with AdBlock

AdBlock is the only ad blocker that allows you to allow ads on individual YouTube channels and continue to block ads everywhere else. Here's how.

  1. Click the AdBlock button in the browser toolbar and select Options.
  2. On the GENERAL tab, select Allow whitelisting of specific YouTube channels.
  3. Restart your browser.
  4. Open a video in a channel you want to allow ads on.
  5. Click the AdBlock button again and select Whitelist (the channel's name) channel.

If you change your mind later, open any video in the channel, click the AdBlock button in the browser toolbar, and select Enable AdBlock on this page.

How to Hide Other Annoyances on YouTube

AdBlock doesn't just block YouTube ads, it can also eliminate several other YouTube annoyances. By subscribing to additional filter lists, you can also hide:

  • the comments section under videos
  • "Recommended," "Suggested," and "Related" videos and channels on your home page, subscriptions page, feed, and channel pages
  • annotations in videos and the sharing tab below videos

Common Issues with YouTube and Ad Blockers

Not surprisingly, "YouTube ads aren't being blocked" is one of the most common complaints we get. "The video is black but the audio plays normally" is another issue we often hear about. We've collected all the solutions or workarounds we know about in these comprehensive troubleshooting guides: I'm seeing ads in YouTube videos and YouTube videos show a black screen with audio.
